Underground is an experimental semi-independent theatre program, founded in 1999, by The DRAMAFEST Foundation and The ARIEL Children and Youth Theatre of Târgu-Mureş, with the support of the Foundation for the Development of Civil Society – Bucharest.
Underground addresses to an adult audience, formed of artists, young intelligentsia and students, people interested and appreciative of new theatre. The program includes presentations of new plays and visual experiments.
The underground performances have become a trademark in Romania. In november 2001, the theatre participated, with four performances of this program, in the independent section of the The I.L.Caragiale National Theatre Festival. Also, in partnership with TheACT Theatre and The MONDAY Theatre of Bucharest, underground organized a theatrical event called undergreenact, a unique albeit small festival of independent and experimental productions. In 2002, The Ariel Theatre was also invited to the National Theatre Festival, with The Vagina Monologues, another very successful and famous production of the theatre.
